The Fox Hollow meeting convened at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at the Forest Service Administrative Office located at 100 Van Morgan Drive, Golden Pond, KY 42211. Tree Planting at the Elk and Bison Prairie

Submitted by Yvonne Helton, Silviculturist We recently planted approximately 1500 shortleaf pine and 70 Bur Oak seedlings within the perimeter of the Elk & Bison Prairie. We chose areas where pine mortality occurred and staff burned off debris piles. So why did we plant Shortleaf Pine?  We value fire tolerant traits such as its ability to re-sprout and natural resistance to fire scar rot.  Shortleaf Pine also produces frequent cone crops. These attributes suit the Elk & Bison Prairie perfectly. Shortleaf Pine may also create a more diverse habitat.  We observed declines of Virginia Pine in the Elk & Bison…

Forest Management Update

  Dear Friends, In a conference call on Tuesday, we met with the Forest Service Washington Office and Congressional Staffers from Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul and Congressman Ed Whitefield’s offices. I shared our plans with them of how we will move forward with our Forest Management. I want to also share them here with you. We are working with our Regional and Washington Offices to modify our existing timber sales. We will be adding “buffer zones” to address visuals along Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway.
