- Guided Trail Rides?

- When Are Seasonal Camping Applications Available?
- • Applications are typically posted on our Seasonal Camping page in late November.
- What is the Campsite Capacity?
- • Each campsite at Wranglers is limited to three camping units as defined in our general camping regulations allowing two wheeled camping units and two vehicles. Examples include motorhome, horse trailer with living quarters, and a tent or a pop-up trailer with two tents. In addition, each site is limited to a maximum of eight people.
- Cabins?
- • Wranglers Campground has five cabins which sleep four and seven cabins which sleep eight. Reserve now.
- Inside the cabin:
- • These rustic, one-room cabins have a heater/air conditioner, ceiling fan with light, small table, folding chairs or benches, and electrical outlets. The four-person cabins have one double bed and one bunk bed. The eight-person cabins have one double bed and three bunk beds. Please bring your own linens, pillows, and/or sleeping bags. There’s no smoking or pets allowed and no additional camping units are allowed on the cabin sites.
- Outside the cabin:
- • Each individual cabin features its own porch, fire ring, and picnic table. Restroom/shower buildings are located in the campground near the cabins. Piney, Hillman Ferry, and Wranglers Campgrounds also have an Outpost for camping supplies and rentals.
- Horse Stalls?
- • Stalls may be reserved or rented upon arrival. Stall fees are charged separately from camping fees. Stall cleaning is the responsibility of stall renters. We recommend daily cleaning to reduce flies and make cleaning easier. Fines may be issued for stalls left unclean.
- Horse Wash Stations?
- • Washing your horse is allowed only at our horse wash stations. See Wranglers Campground map for locations.
- Manure Removal?
- • When cleaning your campsite and stalls, use manure pits located at the barns or pile manure at edge of campground roads or at end of barns on opposite side from water hydrants so maintenance staff can easily remove it.
- Stallions?
- • Stallions must be stalled or kept in trailer at night. Equipment rental reservations are also available. Security and cleaning deposits may be required.
- Tethering?
- • Electric fences are NOT permitted. Metal panels may be used within the tethering areas. In primitive over-flow areas, panels shall be used within impacted area. Please help avoid unnecessary wear and tear in grassy areas.
- Speed Limit?
- • Keep horses at a walking pace in campground. Jumping or racing horses are strictly prohibited. No riding or wagon driving in campground after 10pm.
- Generators?
- • Campers in the 24-hour generator field may run during quiet hours, 11pm-6am.
- Firewood?
- Firewood can be purchased at the gatehouse. You can gather dead and downed firewood.
- Don’t Move Firewood – Protect our National Forests from Invasive Insects and Diseases
- • Leave firewood at home – do not transport it to campgrounds. Use firewood from local sources.
- • If you have moved firewood, burn all of it before leaving your campsite.
- Check In / Check out
- • Check-in is 4:30 p.m., you may check in anytime of your arrival date if the site is vacant. Check-out is 3:30 p.m. A 1 night late fee will be assessed.
- Rocking U Riding Stables
- • Located in Wranglers Campground, Rocking U Riding Stables provides horseback riding to our visitors. The stables are open from March-November. For more information or to make a reservation, call 270-924-2211.

- Horse Health Policy
- • All horses are required to have proof of a current equine infectious anemia (EIA) Test (Coggins) and a current veterinary health certificate in compliance with Kentucky State laws. Refer to kyagr.com or call 502-564-4696 for more information.
- Know Before You Go: Horse Trail Riding
- • Where to Ride: Our horse and wagon trails lead to some of the most scenic spots at Land Between the Lakes. Horse riders can travel along backcountry roads and authorized trails.
- • Know the Rules: You may trailer your horses to other areas to ride. You must display your camping or day-use permit. Know the rules; horses are restricted from some areas on Land Between the Lakes.
- • Permits: Open year round for trail riding, Wranglers offers Annual Permits — for $100, good from January 1 through December 31, and Daily Trailer Permits for $10. You can purchase these permits from the gatehouse. Daily permits may also be purchased online. Annual permits can be purchased at the gatehouse only.
- • Adopt-a-Trail: Please inquire at the gatehouse about Wranglers’ Adopt-a-Trail Program and pick up free litter bags.
- • Deer Hunting Season: We host hunters with firearms during deer season in October and November; trails may be restricted. Please check our Alerts page for trail closures or call ahead to check hunt dates and areas open to horseback riding.
- • Pets: Pets must be on a leash of 6 feet or less and under physical control while in campground. Pets cannot be left unattended. Please take notice of Campground Boundary signs and leash pets at this point when returning to camp. No pets allowed in cabins.
- • Stables: Check out our seasonal horse riding stables. For information call 270-924-2211.
- • Tethering: Tether horses so they cannot chew bark off trees; damage to trees is punishable with a maximum fine of $1,000. Picnic tables and tethering poles have been added at Colson Overlook, “Blue Hole,” and the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm and Living History Museum for your convenience.
- • Wagons: Fluorescent triangles are required on all wagons. Front and rear lights are also required for night rides. No racing allowed.
- Horse and Wagon Trail Information
- • Wranglers Trail Map and Brochure.
- • Safety First: Many old fences, wells, cisterns, and other hazards exist in the forest from old homesteads and iron industry. To avoid these hazards, riding on designated trails recommended.
- • Informational Signage: Information kiosks have been installed at key points on the trail system to help riders recognize their location. Please do not tie to kiosks.
- • Trail Markers and Boundaries: Brown signs mark horse trails; yellow paint on trees mark state boundaries. Crossing Woodlands Trace is permitted. Crossing or entering the US68/KY80 corridor is prohibited.
- • Restrictions: Horses are strictly prohibited in cemeteries, agricultural fields, day-use areas, hike/bike trails, and developed areas other than Wranglers Campground.
- • White signs mark hike/bike trails. Horses are restricted from hiking trails. Exceptions include the North/South Trail from Road 342 to Road 205 and the Model Trail around South Bison Range.
- • Horses are restricted from Woodlands Trace and right-of-way except from Colson Overlook to Forest Service Road 170 Ford’s Bay Road and Road 356 to Road 204.
- • Rules of the Horse Trails: Be courteous. Downhill traffic yields to uphill traffic. We encourage riders to wear reflectors during dusk and dawn hours. We recommend you shod your horses as many trails are rocky. Riders are asked to avoid riding cross-country during periods of wet soil conditions in order to protect our trails.
- • Helmet Use: ASTM International (American Society for Testing and Materials) recommends helmets with equestrian use.
- Bacon Creek Primitive Horse Camp
Bacon Creek Primitive Horse Camp is opening as a trial demonstration project to create new opportunities for users. We will be evaluating the process for camping at this location March 1, 2025. Be sure to check the website for any updates or changes.
Camping information for Bacon Creek Primitive Horse Camp
- • Hours: Open year-round beginning October 30, 2024
- • Cost: $12 per night for everyone ages 18+
- • Check-In: To camp at the primitive camp site visitors will need to pay at Wranglers gatehouse

Rules
- • Motorized vehicles or camping equipment such as RVs and horse trailers are NOT permitted
- • Use a high line for horse tethering, don't tie directly to trees
- • There are no fire rings, all campfires must be fully extinguished when unattended. Check fire restrictions before starting a campfire
- • Pack it in, Pack it out
- • Do not construct use new trails- use the Wranglers Trail map for approved trails to camp
